Skimm'd while saying 'cha-ching' to tax deductions

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"A real blessing" – Bill Gates on how being a billionaire has made him a happier person. Well, that's rich.

WE MEET AGAIN

The Story

Today, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are meeting in Vietnam for their second summit in less than a year.

How'd that first one go again?

Picture this: Singapore. Summer 2018. Trump and Kim meet for the first time after months of exchanging threats and making everyone worried WWIII could start at any minute. It was the first time that a sitting US president and a North Korean leader met in person. Sparks flew.

Sounds...intimate. But was anything actually accomplished?

Ehhh. They agreed to work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" – and Trump said it would start happening ASAP. But they left without any timeline, deadline, or steps to ensure that denuclearization actually happens. And more than six months later, US intelligence officials said the country is "unlikely to give up" all of its nuclear stockpiles.

Ah the age old debate...can people really change?

Trump's an optimist and thinks he has what it takes to change Kim's ways. That he gets him and that they "fell in love." Critics say Trump's being delusional and that Kim is a power-hungry tyrant who won't actually commit to giving up his weapons.

So where does that leave us?

At a negotiating table in Hanoi, Vietnam where the two leaders are talking it out for two days. Here's where each side stands:

What the US wants...Complete denuclearization of North Korea. Meaning: dismantling all nuclear weapons and facilities. And the proof that comes with it.

What it's willing to give...Easing up on sanctions on the North Korean economy. So it can flourish like Vietnam.

What North Korea wants...All US troops out of South Korea. No sanctions on its economy. And for the US to remove its nuclear threat in the region.

What it's willing to give up...Unclear. That's the problem.

What's expected to happen?

Expectations are low. But the two could agree to set up diplomatic offices in the other's country. Or they could take steps towards declaring an end to the Korean War – there hasn't been fighting since 1953, but a peace treaty was never signed (which is one reason why the US still has troops there).

Why is it so hard to get sh*t done with North Korea?

Trying to figure out actions, definitions, and rewards that are acceptable and beneficial to both countries is easier said than done. And even though Kim committed to denuclearization last summer, it's not the first time North Korea has made that commitment. The country is known for dragging its feet. And going rogue.

theSkimm

North Korea has been building up its nuclear weapons for years and is considered one of the world's biggest security threats. Trump supporters consider his attempts to change the dynamic commendable. But critics remain skeptical of North Korea's willingness to change. And for what it means globally: if the US softens its demands, other countries may see it as a green light to build up their own nuclear weapons. Which could lead to the same problem, different country.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say while the House is getting ready for Michael Cohen's testimony

That's not the only thing keeping it busy. Yesterday, it passed a bill to block President Trump's national emergency declaration. Earlier this month, Trump issued the declaration to get funding to build the US-Mexico border wall, since Congress wasn't willing to show him the money. Lawmakers on both sides say he's overstepping his power, and that this could set a precedent for future presidents to do the same. But some Republicans are backing up the president, saying there is actually an emergency at the border, and that he has the authority to declare an emergency. Next step: the Senate has to bring it up to a vote within 18 days. Four Republicans would have to vote in favor to block Trump for it to pass there. But either way, the president has already said he'll veto it. Other news out of DC: a House committee voted to subpoena the Trump admin over docs about family separation – the first subpoena since Dems took over the House. Adding to that, people want answers on the docs from the Department of Health and Human Services that show thousands of allegations of unaccompanied minors being sexually abused while in US custody between 2014 and 2018. A spokesperson for the dept – which oversees unaccompanied minors – says that their safety is "our top concern."

What people are worried about…

Tensions between India and Pakistan. The nuclear-armed countries control parts of a region called Kashmir, where their unofficial border sits. And they've been fighting for full control of it since the 1940s (including two wars). Earlier this month, a Pakistan-based militant group carried out a suicide bombing in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir – the deadliest attack there in decades. India's PM said it would retaliate. Pakistan said it wasn't behind the attack, but would take action if India did. Yesterday, India bombed the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir. India claims it targeted a terrorist training camp, but it's unclear if there was any damage or casualties. It was the first time in decades that Indian warplanes crossed into Pakistan. Today, Pakistan says it shot down two Indian warplanes and captured a pilot. Flights throughout Pakistan and in northern India have been canceled – and people are very much on edge.

What people are talking about…

The United Methodist Church. Yesterday, it voted to uphold its ban on gay marriage and LGBTQ clergy members. The church is the second-largest Protestant one in the US with about 7 million members. While the church bans gay marriage, a number of clergy members have performed same-sex weddings before. And liberal members have been pushing for a more progressive stance on this issue. Yesterday during a church conference, delegates voted to keep that ban going. Now there are concerns that this will alienate a number of followers, and lead to some defections.

What your teacher friends are texting about in the group chat…

This report on racial funding gaps for schools. It says that white school districts get $23 billion more than mostly non-white school districts…even though they typically have the same number of students. Most of this has to do with property taxes. And not enough funding from states.

What to say when you hear about the decision on the AT&T-Time Warner merger

Nevada regulators also have a big announcement. Yesterday, they fined Wynn Resorts for ignoring sexual misconduct complaints. Last year, the former CEO Steve Wynn resigned after a report came out about multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him. Regulators in NV investigated how the company handled the accusations. Turns out, the company knew about them but didn't investigate. Now, the company's getting hit with a record $20 million fine – the largest one in the state's history. Wynn Resorts called the review a step forward for the company.

Skimm'd while planning a permanent OOO…

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Are we going to go to BaDonalds after?" – A dad mic'd up his four-year-old son to figure out what he says during hockey practice. And the kid had his priorities straight.

OSCARS NOT AS WHITE

The Story

What the Academy lacked in a host last night, it made up for in diversity.

So the Academy has learned a thing or two from #OscarsSoWhite?

Apparently. Although the creator of #OscarsSoWhite says there's more work to be done. "Green Book" – which was criticized for being a "white savior" movie – won best picture. Cue a few groans. But Ruth E Carter and Hannah Beachler became the first African Americans to win best costume design and best production design, for "Black Panther." Spike Lee got his due for best adapted screenplay for "BlacKkKlansman." Mahershala Ali is now two for two on best supporting actor wins. Regina King won best supporting actress for "If Beale Street Could Talk." Domee Shi won for an animated short about a dumpling (seriously, just watch this).

Who else is carving their name into a statue?

Rami Malek was the champion. Olivia Colman was the favourite. Also Alfonso Cuarón and Lady Gaga. Period. End of sentence.

You mentioned no host...

Correct. Kevin Hart came and went. So it was up to Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey to open. And give a shoutout to women supporting women. Melissa McCarthy rocked a rabbit dress. Wayne and Garth came out screaming. Awkwafina and John Mulaney were nervous. Spikey Poo noticed.

What else happened?

Jack and Ally. Did we mention Jack and Ally?

Who won the red carpet?

Billy Porter. The cast of "Crazy Rich Asians." Pantsuits. Lady Gaga and that Tiffany diamond. Everyone wearing pink.

Cool. Remind me why everyone cares about the Oscars again?

It's the biggest award in the biz. And it tends to make money move. As in winners can go on to bring home bigger paychecks. And movie studios sometimes say 'cha ching' to higher ticket sales, DVD sales, streaming sales...you get the (best) picture.

theSkimm

With one crisis after another (#OscarsSoWhite, #MeToo, record-low ratings), the Academy has been struggling to stay relevant. This year, voting members seemed to be loud and clear about recognizing more diverse talent. With major film fests coming in the next few months – like Tribeca and Cannes – eyes are on the kinds of stories and talent that will be front-and-center in the coming year.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are still watching…

Venezuela. Over the weekend, violent clashes erupted at the Venezuela-Colombia border. Tensions have been running high in the country ever since opposition leader and head of the country's parliament Juan Guaidó invoked the constitution to act as interim president…in an attempt to oust Nicolás Maduro, who's been president since 2013. Dozens of countries – the US included – have recognized Guaidó as Venezuela's leader. And sent tens of millions of dollars' worth of aid to address Venezuela's humanitarian crisis. But Maduro has been working to block the aid, saying that it's part of a coup attempt by the US. Over the weekend at the Venezuela-Colombia border, pro-Maduro troops fired tear gas at people trying to deliver the aid. People were also working to get aid into the country through Brazil, where violent clashes also broke out. At least four people died and hundreds were injured over the weekend. Today, Guaidó is expected to meet with US VP Mike Pence and other foreign leaders in Colombia to discuss the situation.

Skimm More: Want more on how Venezuela got into this political crisis? Here you go.

What people are talking about…

Men in positions of power. Yesterday, Pope Francis ended his conference addressing the problem of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. He called for an "all-out battle" against the abuse. Critics wondered what exactly that meant. And the Vatican said it will publish a guidebook for bishops on their "duties" regarding abuse. In other news, R Kelly. On Friday, the singer was charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse for allegedly abusing four women, including three who were minors at the time. Now, he's in jail after the judge set a $1 million bond. His lawyer says the women in the case are lying. And in case you thought you were done with stories of men making you say 'ugh,' there's New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. On Friday, he was charged with two counts of soliciting sex as part of a crackdown on human trafficking and prostitution in Florida. Kraft denies doing anything wrong.

What to say when you're not ready to get out of bed…

Snooze. Yesterday, President Trump delayed increasing tariffs on Chinese goods. ICYMI, the US and China have been in the middle of a tit-for-tat trade war. Late last year, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping said 'let's sit down and talk.' That meant no new tariffs for 90 days. That deadline was coming up on Friday. Now, Trump is saying he'll be delaying any new tariffs because of productive talks. Unclear what the new deadline will be.

What health officials are thinking about...

Measles. The World Health Organization says that an outbreak in Madagascar is believed to have killed more than 900 people since the fall. Measles is one of the world's most contagious infectious diseases – but it's preventable with a vaccine. The measles vaccine has saved an estimated 21.1 million people since 2000. But in Madagascar, access to the vaccine is limited and less than 60% of the population is vaccinated. The gov has been trying to vaccinate people en masse to stop the outbreak. In other countries apparently worrying about measles, Costa Rica. The country has been measles-free for five years. But earlier this month, a boy who hadn't gotten his measles vaccination visited from France. He's currently quarantined. But the gov is worried about who he may have come into contact with.

What to say when you see Nike's new ad spotlighting female athletes

I'm not crying, you're crying. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia appointed its first female ambassador to the US.

What to say when you hear Nokia is going all in on the phone cameras

Huawei is going all in on the foldable phone trend.

THING TO KNOW

Traditional IRA vs. Roth IRA

Different options for parking your retirement investments. The biggest difference is when you pay taxes to The Man. In a traditional IRA, you pay them at the end (when the money's taken out). In a Roth IRA, you put in after-tax dollars, so you don't owe any taxes when you go on that permanent OOO. FYI, there are more options when it comes to putting your extra money towards retirement. E*TRADE has the info to help you get started. Check it out.

SKIMM'RS

Spotlight on…Ryan K (CA). He created Bear Closet – an org at UC Berkeley that encourages LGBTQ+ students and allies to serve as mentors to middle and high school students. It's looking to expand to more schools, and connect with other LGBTQ+ orgs around the US.

Congrats to…Lindsay B (VA). She co-wrote and produced a short film that's been racking up writing and best-picture wins at local film festivals. Her team is looking to enter into regional competitions later this year.
