BORN IN THE USA

The Story

President Trump says he plans to sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship.

Back up.

Since 1868, the Constitution's 14th Amendment has granted US citizenship to people born or naturalized on US soil. That includes kids of legal permanent residents. In recent years, an estimated hundreds of thousands of kids were born to undocumented immigrants in the US, and it's been assumed that they have the right to citizenship under the 14th Amendment, too. Now, Trump seems ready to test that.

How?

By going around Congress and issuing an executive order saying that kids of non-citizens and undocumented immigrants don't automatically get citizenship. He also said the US is the only country in the world to do birthright citizenship. (Fact check: it's not.)

Can he do that?

Ehhh. He says so, and that his lawyers have given him the thumbs up. But House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) says 'agree to disagree.' Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) thinks it's something Congress should take up, not the prez. But Rep. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is with Trump on this one. He says the Constitution wasn't meant to be applied to kids of non-citizens. And he's intro'ing similar legislation in the Senate. Either way, this will almost definitely be challenged in the courts.

Why now?

It's unclear. But this all comes as the US is sending thousands of troops to the US-Mexico border – about as many as the US currently has in Iraq and Syria combined. The gov's goal: ensure that thousands of migrants don't enter the US.

theSkimm

Midterms are less than a week away. And immigration seems to be a top issue for GOP voters. Some think this is a tactic on Trump's part to get his base to the polls.

PS: Need a refresher on the immigration debate? Here's your Skimm.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

Who people are talking about…

Whitey Bulger. Yesterday, the notorious Boston mobster was found dead at a prison in West Virginia. He was 89. He might be familiar if you watched "The Departed" or "Black Mass." In the '70s, Bulger became one of the leaders of an Irish crime ring known as the Winter Hill Gang. In '94, he was warned he was about to be indicted, so he ghosted. And was on the run for 16 years. He became no. 2 on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list (right under Osama bin Laden). He was finally caught in California and convicted in connection to 11 murders. He was transferred to this WV prison earlier this week. And was found dead the next day. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

What to say when there's no candy in the office today…

Time to investigate. The Justice Department is now looking into Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, apparently to see if he's used his office for personal gain. Zinke got the job last year and is currently being investigated for multiple things, including his involvement in a land development deal and blocking tribes from opening a casino in Connecticut. His own department's watchdog group referred him to the DOJ. Ouch. Unclear which investigation was referred. Zinke says 'news to me' and that he's done nothing wrong.

What the sports fan in your life will be talking about…

The University of Maryland. Earlier this year, 19-year-old offensive lineman Jordan McNair died of heatstroke weeks after reportedly showing serious signs of distress during a workout. Since then, a report came out accusing the head football coach of fostering a toxic and abusive environment. The university put the coach on paid leave while it investigated. The president of the university reportedly wanted to give the coach the boot. But its board of regents told him to either keep the coach or pack his desk. So, the head coach is staying put…but the president decided he's retiring after the academic school year ends. McNair's dad said "I feel like I've been punched in the stomach and someone spit in my face."

What to say when you hear Shaun White apologized for his Halloween costume…

Don't be that person.

What to say when your friend's quitting social media...

Are you really? Huh, Kanye?

What to say when you're home alone…

Where's Mr. Feeny?

Skimm'd while making a midterms checklist

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Worth it" – Elon Musk on his tweet that cost him and Tesla a casual $40 million.

HATE IN AMERICA

The Story

The country is reeling from a week of divisive violence.

What's going on?

Over the weekend, a gunman opened fire during a morning service at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. 11 people died and six others were injured, including four police officers. It's believed to be the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in US history.

Who's behind this?

The alleged gunman has a history of posting anti-Semitic things on social media. And apparently yelled "all Jews must die" while shooting. He had a rifle and handguns with him. But he had a license to carry and reportedly legally owned them.

What are people saying?

Pittsburgh's mayor called it the "darkest day" in the city's history, but said that "hatred will never win out." President Trump called it "an anti-Semitic attack at its worst."

What else happened?

You also saw the headlines from last week about big-name Dems and Trump critics getting suspicious packages in the mail. They contained pipe bombs – but luckily authorities intercepted them before they exploded. On Friday, authorities arrested and charged a Florida man who they think is responsible. Investigators are still looking into his motive, but he's a big Trump supporter and far-right conspiracy theorist. Now he faces charges like threats against former presidents and mailing explosives.

Anything else?

Last week, there was also a shooting in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. A white man shot and killed two black people at a grocery store. Police say he first tried to enter a mostly-black church, but couldn't get into the building. Authorities are looking into whether it was a hate crime.

theSkimm

The political divide is growing. And hate is turning into violence. Enough is enough.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are talking about...

Indonesia. Earlier today, a passenger plane carrying 189 people from the capital Jakarta to an island off the coast of Sumatra crashed. Minutes after takeoff, the plane requested to return to the airport. It had been cleared to return before it lost contact. It's still unclear if there are survivors or what caused the crash.

What to say when you get a new boss...

There's a new sheriff in town. Yesterday, right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil's presidential election. He beat leftist candidate Fernando Haddad with about 55% of the votes. Brazil is the world's fourth-largest democracy, but it's been struggling with corruption, high crime, and a weak economy. And many Brazilians blame Haddad's party. Enter Bolsonaro aka Brazil's Donald Trump: the anti-establishment candidate who's promising to crack down on crime and corruption, and has mentioned his nostalgia for Brazil's military dictatorship that ended in 1985. He's also made a ton of headlines for his comments about about minorities, women, and the LGBT community. Supporters say he'll bring the change the country needs. Opponents say they are scared and that his positions are too extreme. It is the country's biggest shift in politics since the end of its dictatorship.

What to say when someone swears in a meeting...

Blasphemy, I say. Over the weekend, Ireland voted to nix an ancient rule that banned blasphemy. This is the most recent example of the country moving away from its conservative, religious roots. It also re-elected its president. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is having some issues. The prez and prime minister duo that came into power in 2015 promised to end corruption and human rights abuses. Turns out it's more like drama and more drama. The prez booted his PM – which people are calling unconstitutional. It's led to political chaos and violence.

What to say to your friend who stayed up to watch all 18 innings in Game 3...

It was all worth it. Last night, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5. It's their fourth championship win in 15 seasons. Time to pahty.

What to say when you're feeling Monday blues…

Hasan Minhaj to the rescue.
